ARTS & CULTURE

Many skilled and talented artists make Newtown their home providing the community with vibrant art exhibitions, theater, talent programs and cultural creativity.  Cultural venues include music, theater, visual arts and literacy groups.

On any warm day artists may be seen painting scenes en plein air at Ram’s Pasture, along Main Street, at Fairfield Hills or the many other public areas. The scenic historic village, open pastures, meadows and woodlands provide the perfect backdrop for local and visiting artists in which to work.

Newtown Friends of Music have been presenting live classical music on stage at the Edmond Town Hall on Main Street since 1978.

Newtown’s newest cultural group, the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission sponsors many entertaining and creative programs.  The Flagpole Radio Cafe is in its third season and plans for the fourth season are underway.

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) have supported and promoted visual arts in Newtown for more than thirty years.  SCAN offers regular programs such as demonstration meetings featuring professional artists, workshops with practicing artists, informal “drop in” sketch sessions with models and many other educational opportunities. In addition, we sponsor three art shows each year. Each month we publish SCAN INK, a newsletter for our members, which provides complete details about our programs

The Town Players of Newtown have been performing in Newtown since 1936 and continue to entertain us from the stage of The Little Theatre located on Old Orchard Road, Newtown, Connecticut.

Flagpole Photographers meet regularly and provide guest speakers and competition for professional and armatures alike.

The Newtowner is Newtown's arts and literacy magazine featuring fiction, poetry, memoir, essays and features celebrating local literary, visual and performing artists.

Stray Kats Theatre Company is Newtown's regional repertory company providing delightful staged readings presented with professional casts.

The Housatonic Valley Cultural Alliance or HVCA is a regional organization based in Danbury CT that connects and strengthen the arts to enrich our community.
