Developing Views 2026 – Vol. 12
Here’s to hoping your whacky weather roller coaster of a July has been good so far.
With the milestones of the FIFA World Cup and the Independence Day kickoff of America’s 250th celebrations behind us, it’s great to see the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) continuing to thematically move the ball with the agency’s announcement of the “Freedom 250 Small Business Pledge.”
I recently had an opportunity to visit with Newtown’s regional SBA Outreach Specialist Sylina Jacobs. Ms. Jacobstalked about the variety of business support programs, training, and financial opportunities available for local businesses through the agency.
From helping manufacturers connect with U.S.-based suppliers and “Made In America” products, to promoting several different SBA guaranteed loan opportunities, listening sessions and continuing education, her office is there for Newtown businesses looking for support.
Connect with her at Sylina.Jacobs@SBA.GOV
Pivoting back, the U.S. Small Business Administration recently launched the SBA Freedom 250 Small Business Pledge, and is inviting American small business owners to join the nationwide celebration honoring 250 years of American independence, entrepreneurship, and free enterprise.
According to the advance materials from SBA, small businesses are at the heart of America’s economy and the foundation of local Main Street Communities across the nation.
As America celebrates its 250th birthday, the Freedom 250 Small Business Pledge Campaign Invites entrepreneurs, family-owned businesses, and small manufacturers to stand together in recognition of the innovation, resilience, values, and hard work that define the American spirit.

By taking the pledge, your business becomes part of the nationwide movement celebrating the small businesses and job creators that power America forward every day.
The pledge proudly affirms a commitment to:
*Build and grow in America
*Create opportunity for American workers
*Advance an America First economy
*Innovate and invest in the future
*Uphold America’s entrepreneurial spirit
The online pledge only takes a few minutes to complete. Participating business will receive an official Freedom 250 Pledge Certificate and recognition for helping shape the next 250 years of American enterprise.
Display your certificate proudly as a symbol of your commitment to your community, your employees, and America’s next chapter.
For 250 years, small businesses have powered innovation, created opportunity, and strengthened local communities. Through Freedom 250, SBA is honoring that legacy while investing in the next generation of builders, makers, and job creators. Throughout 2026, SBA will launch a series of national initiatives to recognize American ingenuity, elevate small businesses, and reaffirm the role of Main Street in building America’s future.
SBA is also hosting an upcoming entrepreneur training program for Service Members and military spouses. This two-day “Introduction to Entrepreneurship” course introduces Active-Duty (including National Guard and Reserve), and Veterans of all eras, to key elements of small business ownership to assist in determining if entrepreneurship is a feasible and practical transition strategy.
It’s happening August 27-28 in Groton, in-person from 8-3:30 pm. If interested, please Register Here (Log-in required to register)
I also want to continue reminding new and existing qualified Newtown businesses and entrepreneurs to take advantage of the free Business Directory listings the Economic and Community Development Office offers right here at Newtown.org.
All qualified Newtown businesses that create a listing on the site will be collaterally promoted at no charge during a Newtown Restaurant and Small Business Appreciation Week being planned for October. Register your business now by CLICKING HERE
Additionally, as an active Western CT Tourism District community tied to the Office of Tourism and its CTVisit.com resource, we are promoting an additional opportunity to promote your restaurant, destination site, or food service enterprise on the state’s website ABSOLUTELY FREE!
CTvisit.com previously logged 7.3 million site visits through July in a record-breaking season, representing a 44% year-over-year increase. The site consistently drives over 3 million outbound referrals to in-state tourism businesses annually, so there’s potential for significant added exposure and traffic by going through the registration procedure.
Just go to CTVisit.com/user – and click on “Become a Partner.” Once you submit your application, you’ll receive instructions on how to create ad maintain your listing.
And for all you businesses who promote on social networks, consider tagging our district by including @visitwesternCT on Facebook, and @visit_westernct on Instagram – or pasting the following hash tags: #CTVISIT #MakeItHere #Connecticut #Newtownct #sandyhookct #fairfieldcountyct and #thingstodoct
